Construction started in 1881 by the French and lasted 8 years ending with failure. In 1904 the Americans took over and successfuly finished the project in 1914. From 1914 to 1977, it was under American control and from 1977 -1999, under Panamenian-American Control, afterwhich, it went under the panamenian Port Authrity control. An expansion of the canal took place by the Americam from 2014-2016, which enabled supertankers and large cargo ships to pass through the canal. The jurney through the canal from the Caribbeans (Atlantic Ocean) to the Pacific Ocean (51 miles) takes about 14 hours. There are 3 lanes & sets of locks (Gatun locks) in each direction. The Original 2 Lanes (& locks) were110 ft wide (opening doors) and and newer Locks are 180-920 feet wide and are sliding locks. All operations are automatic and centrally controlled.
